PM Modi Advocates for Holistic Water Management at Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari Initiative

Date:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today delivered a compelling speech at the Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari Initiative, emphasizing the vital role of water conservation in ensuring a sustainable future for India. Addressing a gathering of policymakers, environmentalists, and citizens, Modi articulated the necessity of a unified approach to water management, drawing from both ancient practices and modern innovations.

In his address, Modi reflected on India’s historical expertise in water management, acknowledging that the country, despite holding only 4% of the world’s fresh water resources, has long practiced sophisticated methods to conserve and utilize this limited supply. He described water conservation as not just a responsibility but a critical element of national sustainability.

The Prime Minister highlighted the achievements of the Jal Jeevan Mission, a flagship program aimed at delivering piped water to rural areas. To date, this mission has succeeded in providing reliable water access to over 15 crore households. Modi praised this initiative as a testament to the government’s commitment to enhancing rural infrastructure and improving the quality of life.

Modi also spotlighted the Jal Shakti Abhiyan, which has evolved into a significant national movement. This campaign has led to the construction of more than 60,000 Amrit Sarovars—large-scale water bodies designed to enhance water storage and groundwater recharge. He lauded accompanying programs such as Catch the Rain and Namami Gange for their focus on rainwater harvesting and river rejuvenation, respectively.

In his remarks, the Prime Minister called for the integration of innovative technologies with traditional water management practices, particularly in agriculture. He urged stakeholders to adopt new techniques that could complement age-old knowledge to maximize water efficiency and agricultural productivity. “The fusion of technology and tradition will be key to advancing our water conservation goals,” Modi asserted.

The Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari Initiative seeks to mobilize a “Whole of Society and Government” approach, encouraging active participation from all sectors of society in water management efforts. Modi’s call to action aims to foster a culture of collaboration and innovation in tackling India’s water challenges.

As India faces increasing pressures on its water resources, the Prime Minister’s vision highlights a comprehensive strategy to ensure long-term water security, leveraging both historical wisdom and modern advancements to safeguard this critical resource for future generations.
