Ayush Ministry Introduces 5-Minute In-Flight Yoga Routine for Air Travellers

Date:

The Ministry of Ayush has introduced a specially designed five-minute in-flight yoga routine to help air travellers stay fit, relaxed, and energised during flights.

The initiative was launched during Yoga Mahotsav 2026, aiming to address common health issues associated with long-duration air travel.

Yoga for Preventive Healthcare at 35,000 Feet

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush Prataprao Jadhav said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to promoting yoga as a tool for preventive healthcare and holistic well-being.

The routine has been developed by the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY) and is designed to be performed easily while seated, without requiring any special equipment.

Addressing In-Flight Health Concerns

Long hours of sitting during flights often lead to:

  • Stiffness and fatigue
  • Poor blood circulation
  • Stress and discomfort
  • Increased risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis in extreme cases

The ministry said the new protocol aims to counter these issues through simple movements and breathing techniques.

Ayush Secretary Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha подчеркed that even in confined spaces like aircraft cabins, yoga can significantly improve circulation and reduce stress.

Key Features of the 5-Minute Yoga Routine

The protocol combines light physical activity, breathing, and meditation:

  • Centring exercises to build awareness
  • Joint movements like shoulder rotations and ankle stretches
  • Seated yoga postures including spinal twists and gentle stretches
  • Breathing techniques such as Anulom Vilom and Bhramari
  • Short meditation for relaxation

These practices help improve blood flow, reduce fatigue, ease anxiety, and support better adjustment to time zone changes.

Promoting Everyday Wellness Habits

Ayush Joint Secretary Monalisa Dash said the initiative aims to encourage people to integrate wellness into daily routines, even in limited spaces.

The ministry emphasised that maintaining health does not require extra time or resources—only awareness and consistency.

A Step Towards Healthier Travel

With rising air travel and increasingly sedentary journeys, the initiative encourages passengers to adopt simple yet effective wellness practices, making healthy living possible even at cruising altitude.
