Bengaluru, April 9: The government has announced measures to ease LPG supply pressures, ensuring industries receive up to 70 % of their pre‑March 2026 allocations, while expanding access to 5‑kg cylinders for migrant workers and daily-wage labourers.
Industrial sectors including pharmaceuticals, food processing, metals, ceramics, agriculture, and packaging will receive priority LPG supplies to maintain operations where natural gas substitutes are unavailable. The allocation is capped at 0.2 thousand metric tonnes per day per sector.
Meanwhile, 5‑kg LPG cylinders, known as Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinders, have been made more widely available to migrants at distributors, petrol pumps, and retail outlets, priced around ₹1,500 with refill costs of ₹630–631. The cylinders can be purchased with any government-issued ID, easing access for workers without permanent addresses.
However, many migrants remain unaware of the 5‑kg cylinder scheme, according to distributors. Awareness campaigns are being conducted at labour settlements, transport hubs, and distribution points to inform workers about eligibility and collection procedures.
Officials say the 5‑kg cylinder initiative aims to reduce illegal refills sold at inflated prices while ensuring fair access for transient populations. Industries and migrant workers are advised to check with local distributors for supply updates and procedures.
The move comes amid global fuel supply pressures, but authorities maintain that domestic LPG supply remains stable, with priority given to households and critical industries.
