Hydel Power Boom: Karnataka Records Strongest Output in Recent Years

Date:

Bengaluru | April 11, 2026: The state of Karnataka has achieved a record-breaking milestone in hydel (hydroelectric) power generation, producing 15,509 million units (MU) of electricity in the financial year 2025–26, marking its strongest performance in recent years.

According to official data from Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL), the surge in hydropower output was driven by favourable monsoon rainfall, improved reservoir levels, and better plant maintenance and operational efficiency across major hydro stations, including the Sharavathi and Varahi river systems. The state’s hydel generation has significantly increased compared to the previous year’s output of 13,853 MU.

Officials noted that Karnataka’s hydropower stations, some of which are among the oldest in India, continue to perform efficiently and play a crucial role in meeting the state’s electricity demand, especially during peak consumption periods. The achievement further strengthens Karnataka’s position as one of the leading hydropower-producing states in the country.

The development highlights the growing importance of renewable energy in India’s power sector, with hydel energy remaining a key contributor to clean electricity generation.
