Bengaluru: The South Western Railway (SWR) has announced major disruptions to train operations due to planned yard remodelling work at KSR Bengaluru City Railway Station, which will affect services between June 16 and August 4.
The extensive infrastructure upgrade is aimed at improving operational efficiency and enhancing safety at one of Bengaluru’s busiest railway hubs. However, the work is expected to cause widespread cancellations, partial withdrawals, and route diversions across multiple passenger and express train services, particularly on key routes such as Bengaluru–Mysuru and other intercity connections.
According to railway officials, the 49-day maintenance and remodelling project will involve significant changes to train movement patterns, including full cancellations of select services and alterations in arrival and departure terminals for several others. The decision has been taken to facilitate safe execution of yard modification works without operational risks.
As part of the disruption plan, five major train services will be fully cancelled during the project period. These include important passenger services that typically cater to daily commuters and regional travellers. In addition, around 40 train services will either be partially cancelled, short-terminated, or diverted to alternate routes or stations.
Several trains operating on the busy Bengaluru–Mysuru corridor, which sees heavy daily passenger traffic, are expected to face changes in schedule and stoppages. Some services will be terminated at intermediate stations instead of reaching KSR Bengaluru, while others will originate from alternate terminals such as Kengeri, Yelahanka, or Bengaluru Cantonment, depending on operational requirements.
For instance, certain MEMU services will be curtailed mid-route, while long-distance trains may be rerouted through alternate railway lines, bypassing the central station entirely. Officials have also indicated that at least 36 trains will skip select halts, affecting connectivity for several suburban and regional stations. The South Western Railway has advised passengers to expect schedule changes, platform adjustments, and revised travel timings during this period. Commuters have been urged to regularly check updated train schedules before planning their journeys to avoid inconvenience.
Railway authorities have stated that the project is part of a broader effort to modernise Bengaluru’s railway infrastructure, which has been under pressure due to increasing passenger demand and rising train frequency. The yard remodelling work is expected to enhance track capacity, reduce congestion, and improve train handling efficiency once completed.
While the upgrades are expected to benefit passengers in the long term, daily commuters are likely to face temporary difficulties, especially those travelling between Bengaluru and neighbouring districts such as Mysuru, Mandya, Ramanagara, and Hassan. The railway administration has assured that all necessary steps are being taken to minimise passenger inconvenience, including issuing advance notifications, adjusting train routes, and coordinating with station authorities across affected divisions.
Passengers have been advised to plan alternative travel arrangements during the disruption window and stay updated through official railway communication channels for real-time changes in schedules.
With Bengaluru’s KSR station being a critical rail hub in southern India, the ongoing work is expected to temporarily reshape rail traffic flow across the region, before normal operations resume after August 4.
