Meta Launches Instagram for TV App on Google TV, Brings Reels to Big Screens

Date:

New Delhi: Social media giant Meta has launched the Instagram for TV app for Google TV, enabling users to watch Instagram Reels directly on their television screens.

The move is widely seen as a strategic attempt to challenge YouTube’s dominance in the TV streaming space and signals Meta’s determination to compete across all video-viewing platforms. Interestingly, Meta is leveraging Google’s own TV platform to rival its video ecosystem.

What’s Special About Instagram for TV?

The newly launched Instagram for TV app offers a personalized viewing experience. It curates Reels based on users’ favorite creators and content preferences from their Instagram accounts.

Key features include:

  • Categorized Reels under themes such as comedy, music, and lifestyle
  • Auto-play functionality, eliminating the need to scroll for the next video
  • Options to like, comment, and reshare Reels directly from the TV interface

This innovation brings short-form video content to larger screens, potentially redefining how users consume bite-sized entertainment.

Multi-Account Support on a Single Home Page

Users can link the TV app to their existing Instagram account. The app allows up to five accounts to be added on a single home page, offering flexibility for families or multiple users. Alternatively, users can create a separate account specifically for TV viewing.

By expanding Instagram Reels to smart TVs, Meta is reshaping the short-form video landscape. Its rival TikTok has also introduced a TV app, but it has yet to achieve widespread popularity.

With Instagram now available on Google TV, Meta is positioning itself as a strong competitor in the evolving digital entertainment and streaming ecosystem.
