Karnataka Govt Proposes Special Buses, Zero Standing Rule for Students

Date:

In a significant step aimed at improving student safety, the Karnataka government is considering the introduction of dedicated buses exclusively for school and college students, along with enforcing a complete ban on standing during travel. The proposal comes amid rising concerns over overcrowding and risks faced by students in regular public transport.

Officials are working on a plan that would ensure every student gets a seat, effectively eliminating the current practice where many travel standing in packed buses. The move is expected to be implemented primarily in Bengaluru, where thousands of students depend daily on services operated by the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC).

The government is also exploring additional safety measures, including better monitoring systems, regulated boarding, and possibly installing CCTV cameras and GPS tracking to improve accountability and security during transit. The idea is to create a more controlled and student-friendly commuting environment, especially during peak hours when buses are often overcrowded.

This initiative follows increasing public concern over student safety, with reports highlighting congestion and unsafe travel conditions in city buses. Authorities believe that separating student commuters from general passengers could significantly reduce risks and improve overall travel comfort.

If approved, the plan could bring a major shift in urban transport policy by prioritizing safe, dignified, and structured travel for students, potentially benefiting lakhs of daily commuters across Karnataka.
