India-Romania Partnership to Gain Momentum; President Murmu Highlights Trade, Innovation and EU Cooperation

Date:

President Droupadi Murmu arrived in Bucharest on July 23, 2026, for the final leg of her three-nation state visit. This marks the first visit by an Indian President to Romania in nearly 30 years. She was welcomed at the airport by Romanian Foreign Minister Oana-Silvia Toiu before holding high-level meetings with Romanian President Nicusor Dan.

President Murmu was accorded a ceremonial welcome at Cotroceni Palace and held bilateral and delegation-level talks with President Dan. Both leaders agreed to enhance cooperation in the fields of trade, investment, science and technology, education, culture, and innovation, and also set an ambitious target to double bilateral trade over the next three years.

Highlighting Romania’s importance as India’s partner within the European Union, President Murmu stated that the proposed India-EU Free Trade Agreement would create unprecedented opportunities for industries and skilled professionals in both countries. She also welcomed the three agreements aimed at strengthening ties in education, culture, and people-to-people relations.

Both sides decided to enhance cooperation in the field of research and development, establish an Indian Studies Chair at the University of Bucharest with the assistance of the ICCR, and double Romania’s participation in India’s ITEC training program. They also agreed to celebrate the 80th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2028 as the “India-Romania Year of Innovation.”

During her visit on Friday, President Murmu will address the India-Romania Business Forum and visit the Romanian Parliament and the Bucharest University of Economic Studies.
