Date:

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal began his official visit to Japan on Monday with meetings involving CEOs and business leaders from major Japanese companies. During these interactions, he discussed prospects for further strengthening the India-Japan economic partnership.

Goyal is visiting Japan from August 24 to 27, with stops in Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka. He is leading India’s largest-ever business delegation, comprising over 200 business representatives.

On the social media platform X, Goyal shared that he met with Shingo Ueno, President and CEO of Sumitomo Corporation, in Tokyo. The two discussed opportunities to expand the company’s engagement in India across various sectors, including energy transition, mobility, and industrial infrastructure.

Goyal stated that India’s investment-led economic growth and rapidly expanding manufacturing sector offer immense opportunities to enhance India-Japan cooperation, thereby further strengthening the economic partnership between the two nations.

He also met with Toshiaki Nagasato, President and Representative Director of Meiji Seika Pharma Co. Ltd. Discussions during this meeting focused on strengthening India-Japan cooperation in the pharmaceutical sector and exploring possibilities for expanding the company’s manufacturing and R&D footprint in India.

Goyal remarked that India’s pharmaceutical ecosystem presents significant opportunities for Japanese companies to expand their operations and achieve long-term growth.

Over 200 Business Representatives Included
According to an official statement, the Indian business delegation comprises more than 200 representatives. The delegation includes representatives from diverse sectors such as manufacturing, semiconductors, clean energy, steel, automobiles, financial services, healthcare, and startups.

This visit takes place at a time when India and Japan are working to deepen their trade and investment ties under the framework of their Special Strategic and Global Partnership. In Tokyo, Goyal will hold several meetings with the top leadership of major Japanese business groups and industrial companies—firms that have long contributed to India’s development.

He will also participate in a roundtable meeting with Keidanren (the Japan Business Federation), the country’s leading business organization, which represents over 1,500 major Japanese companies.

During the visit, special sessions will be held focusing on semiconductors, artificial intelligence, startups, and engagement with foreign institutional investors. These sessions aim to showcase India as a key hub for investment and innovation.

Investment and Business Roadshow in Osaka
Goyal’s visit to Japan will conclude with an ‘Investors and Business Roadshow’ in Osaka. Additionally, he will meet with leading Japanese companies across the electronics, industrial, and consumer sectors.

These meetings will highlight investment and business opportunities available in India’s manufacturing, clean energy, and consumer markets.
