14-Crore Redevelopment Plan: Floating Wetlands, Desilting and Walkways Planned for Kacharakanahalli Lake

Date:

Bengaluru: Bengaluru is taking a major step towards improving the environment and nature in cities, in which work is being started to clean and beautify Kachakanahalli Lake of Bengaluru. this project is being carried out as a comprehensive redevelopment at a cost of ₹14 crore. The aim is to transform this old and degraded lake into a beautiful and environmentally friendly picnic spot. Additionally, new walking paths and improved infrastructure will be created to enhance the environment.

According to officials, the Bengaluru North Municipal Corporation (BNCC) and the Minor Irrigation Department are jointly carrying out this redevelopment. The total cost of the project will be ₹14 crore. Of this, ₹4 crore will be provided by the BNCC, and the remaining ₹10 crore will be spent by the Irrigation Department.

Spread across nearly 16 acres, the lake restoration work includes extensive desilting and deepening operations to enhance water storage capacity and improve groundwater recharge in the area. Authorities stated that these activities are expected to significantly strengthen the lake’s long-term sustainability, especially during periods of heavy rainfall and water scarcity.

One of the key attractions of the project is the construction of a 1.2-kilometre-long pedestrian walkway around the lake, designed to create a green public space for residents. The redevelopment plan also includes ornamental grill fencing, sedimentation ponds, landscaping, and a dedicated security room to improve maintenance and public access.

Environmental restoration forms the core of the initiative, with officials planning to establish floating wetlands inside the lake. These eco-sensitive systems are intended to naturally absorb pollutants and nutrients from incoming water, helping improve water quality while supporting aquatic biodiversity. Experts believe the wetlands could play a crucial role in reducing pollution levels and restoring ecological balance in the area.

Additionally, authorities have proposed the construction of an idol immersion tank within the lake premises to prevent direct pollution of the waterbody during festival seasons. The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is also considering a sewage treatment plant for the locality, although the final location is yet to be confirmed.

Kacharakanahalli Lake, located in the Sarvagnanagar Assembly constituency, was ruined by years of garbage dumping, encroachment, reflecting Bengaluru’s broader struggle to protect its historic lake network amid rapid urban expansion.

Local residents and environmental organizations have praised the project, hoping that the lake’s restoration will benefit the surrounding flora and fauna, provide a pleasant place for people to visit, and contribute to Bengaluru’s better development.
